In keeping to our promise in previous posts (Invisalign and 6 Month Smiles), for the month of January I will be sharing exciting options that my patients have when it comes to smile enhancement. This week we take a closer look at veneers.
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or plastic that is placed over a tooth surface to either protect it or perfect it. Veneers are an ideal treatment for common teeth imperfections like discolouration, broken or chipped teeth, worn or uneven teeth, and gaps between teeth to name a few. Veneers are a popular option for patients because they are durable and do not stain easily.
There are two kinds of veneers available for patients: porcelain or composite. Porcelain veneers require two dental appointments because they are uniquely designed to fit your teeth and are created in an offsite laboratory. The first visit is to get an accurate imprint of your teeth, and the second visit is for application of the veneers. Porcelain veneers are more expensive but last 10 – 15 years.
Composite veneers can be applied in a single dental appointment and come at a significant cost savings to porcelain. However, they have half the life expectancy of porcelain veneers.
While veneers are not a substitute for adult braces, we think they are a great option for patients looking to repair their teeth and get that natural looking Hollywood smile. And we can guide towards making the right decision during the selection process. Here’s a before and after video featuring celebrity smiles before and after veneers (might want to mute the audio!)
